About Karate
The art, its history and its principles.
Karate is a martial art developed on the island of Okinawa, blending native Okinawan fighting techniques with influences from Chinese martial arts. The word "karate" means "empty hand," reflecting its origin as an unarmed system of self-defense.
Goju-Ryu, one of the traditional styles of Okinawan karate, literally translates to "hard-soft style." It combines powerful, direct techniques (Go) with circular, flowing movements (Ju) — teaching practitioners to blend strength with flexibility, both in technique and in mindset.
Training in karate develops far more than physical technique. Students build discipline, focus, respect and resilience through kata (structured forms), kumite (sparring) and rigorous physical conditioning — principles that carry well beyond the dojo.
